Rhodes - Grand Master's Palace - Hall South

The Grand Master's Palace was built in the fourteenth century, was converted to jail in Ottoman period and was destroyed in 1856 to the explosion of a powder housed in the church of San Giovanni, which stood on the opposite side of the square. It was raised again during the years of Italian rule, Reconstruction ended in 1940, just before the Italians left the island. The entrance with its imposing towers is one of the few original elements. Inside has a large colonnaded courtyard, its interior is lavishly decorated. In a corner of via dei Cavalieri is the first hospice of the Knights, whose construction lasted from 1440 to 1489 and today is home to the Archaeological Museum.
