Syria - Apamea - The Cardo

Apamea is located on the right bank Orontes, 55km to the northwest of Hama , on 'plateau Gahab . It was built by Seleucos Nikator first Seleucid king (300 BC), in honor of his Afamia wife. The city flourished and its population reached the number, remarkable for the time, half a million. Christian era Apamea became a center of philosophical studies, in particular where he said the Monophysite (the affirmation of the unique nature of Christ). Many of the remains of Aphamea are Roman and Byzantine times. Ancient city walls remain high, the beautiful colonnade, the world's longest, measuring about 2km long and 87m wide. The caravanserai built by the Turks in the sixteenth is now transformed into the archaeological museum, which houses mosaics from Apamea .
